MY CAREER VISION
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.
If I could sum up how I approach each day into one sentence, it would be that. If I ever want to reach my potential, accomplish my goals, and be successful, I have to have discipline. Discipline means no excuses. It means every day I have to put in the effort to move the needle just a little bit more to where I want it to be. I can’t rely on just motivation. In fact, no one can. Some days you might feel motivated, but others you won’t. You’ll be tired, or unfocused. Motivation is a non-renewable resource. Discipline, however, is hard-wired into you. Once you build good habits, they stay there, even on bad days.
That right there is my personal philosophy. It’s not a list of several rules or ideas. It’s just one. Be disciplined. Because if I can be disciplined, I can accomplish anything I want.
As for my vision for the future, I want to be a leader of a software solution provider that can empower small businesses to scale and grow. I especially love SaaS products that give small businesses the ability to compete with large firms. All too often, small companies can’t take advantage of emerging technologies due to lack of resources. Large companies reap the benefits of new technology, while small companies struggle to grow.
How did I come up with my vision?
My passion for marketing began at the end of high school in my hometown of Reno, Nevada. I had always thought I would pursue a career related to math, since it was by far my strongest subject.
However, my Junior and Senior years I signed up for “The Company”, a class where the students got to manage and run the school’s on-campus store. Throughout those two years we had several promotions and special events that we had to advertise to parents and students alike. Unlike math where there’s (usually) only one solution to a problem, these challenges required me to be creative and construct my own solutions to meet goals. I was hooked instantly.
From there I majored in Business Administration – Marketing at the University of Nevada. I loved learning about marketing so much that I even joined the on-campus marketing agency as an Account Manager, and I joined the university’s chapter of the American Marketing Association where I became the Vice President of Communications.
As for my other mentioned passion, helping small businesses grow, that began once I graduated college and entered the workforce.
When I was just starting out, I specifically sought out small companies to work for. Why? Because I figured I would learn more and get more experience. Sure, I could’ve went to work for a large firm in an entry-level position, but I was afraid of being siloed into one area of marketing. I didn’t want that. I wanted to opportunity to be a part of it all, and learn as much as I could.
I went to for an organic tea manufacture, wholesaler, and online retailer. Not only was I their first marketing employ, I was their first new hire with a college degree! The owner/CEO brought me on to head up all marketing efforts, as well as to be a jack-of-all-trades to just about everything else going on in the company.
Clearly I got more than I bargained for. However, I loved every minute of it. Not only did I get to learn a lot about everything it takes to successfully reach your target market and bring them to you, but I also saw first-hand the challenges small businesses face.
There were many times I came across a new software solution that could help us in our efforts, only to not be able to take advantage of it due to our small company not having the resources to purchase. Larger companies were using these tools and getting bigger, while I felt like we were stuck in the past.
When I moved to San Jose, I started working in the software industry. I wanted to learn about technology, it’s capabilities, and how they could benefit the world. In 2017, I started working at Splashtop, the worldwide leader in remote access technology.
My role is Splashtop is a dream. I get to use all the latest marketing solutions out there to build out multi-layered marketing campaigns, and I get to work for a company that specializes in helping small-to-medium sized businesses grow. Our software comes with all of the top features our target market (MSPs and IT teams) need. But, we’re usually 50% to 80% less expensive to our competitors. Our product combined with our low pricing gives SMBs the chance to afford the best technology. This helps them work more efficient, save money, bring on more customers, and grow their business.
I know for sure that this is what I want to do with my life. I look forward to each day because it’s another chance to learn, experiment, and push myself one step closer to reaching my dreams.
